Why this petition matters

Started by RRR SLO

The Environmental Protection Agency approximates 75% of America’s waste stream is recyclable. Unfortunately, due to people improperly separating their waste about 45% of this total goes straight to landfill, leaving only 30% of the stream recycled. College students often move from their hometowns to completely new cities and counties in the pursuit of higher education. Therefore, students are assuming the waste guidelines where they attend college are the same as those in their hometowns. However, guidelines vary significantly from county to county, and with careless recycling practices on our campuses, immense amounts of excess waste are accumulating, consequently posing a serious threat to the environment. If the students of today simply had the knowledge and resources on how to properly recycle in their communities, we believe they would.

This unknown knowledge is exactly what Refuse, Reuse, Recycle! Edu aims to provide for our campus community. RRR is an educational resource for students, teachers, and staff at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Our 15-minute virtual training makes it quick and simple for the Cal Poly community to not only learn our county's recycling guidelines but also how to make easy lifestyle changes that better our planet.

Because we strongly believe that providing this educational resource is so necessary, we would greatly appreciate it if you could sign this petition to make the training mandated for all members of our campus community.
