Why this petition matters

Started by Anne C

Im asking the Goverment to make it law that cat owners keep their pet indoors.

Cats are not a natural part of the food chain. We introduced them and now our wildlife can’t cope.

10.9 million house holds in the UK have a cat, every year those cats catch up to 100 million prey items over spring and summer, squirrels and rabbits along with 27 million birds and given there's estimated only 85million breeding pairs of all birds in the UK that is a huge loss and on top of the loss of habitat its a battle for survival. They are not killed to be sustenance, cats still maintain the hunting instinct but for the most part they do not eat what they kill. Wildlife has a struggle to survive as it is due to climate change, the land used for nesting sites being built on and destroyed for roads etc so to do anything we can to aid it is a huge step in the right direction. Already a number of British Birds such as the song thrush, lapwing and cuckoo are already so low in number they are on their way to being extinct. We should do everything we can to support our wildlife to thrive because together we can save the wild kingdom for ourselves and those who come after us.

If a pet is bought then it comes with the knowledge that it is domesticated. Of course its heart warming to see an animal do what it does naturally, seeing your cat roaming but a parrots natural instinct is to fly thousands of miles and a dogs is to herd, chase and run in a pack but they aren't free to do whatever they desire. Majority of dogs are kept indoors for their lives even large breeds and they are walked for exercise and have to be content with that. Each year dogs and young children get sick coming in contact with cat faeces which would stop if changes are made. Dog owners would be fined for fouling where as cats roam a huge area and its hard to identify the cat before it runs off so they cant be traced back to the owner.  Exercising by walking them on an extendable leader and indoor equipment would be more than sufficient because cats sleep for 70% of their day so for only 30% they are awake. Plus being indoors allows for cat breeding to be monitored as there are so many kittens and cats in shelters which end up being put down or being born in the wild turning feral which adds to the problem as they kill more for food in order to survive.

People keep cats indoors if they are an expensive breed or a hairless breed not able to handle to UK climate and they are happy as statistics show cats live longer and stay healthier indoors so this benefits the cat too because there are so many dangers outside for them. Statistically outdoor cats struggle to make it past age 5 where as indoor cats can reach their 20s. It's cutting their life span down drastically. Cats are majestic and incredible animals but the fact is domestic cats do not belong outside and its placing them in a situation it can struggle to handle with parasites, diseases and increasing dangers. Additionally with the weather conditions a lot of cats are found deceased by being frozen to death or dehydrated in the heat. The worry about cats coming to harm would be eradicated by being indoors.

By making this change the government can ensure owners can be held accountable for their pets fouling, breeding and cats are safe indoors but imperatively it will save our wild life. Now is the time to take action and nurture the world we have. Please help save the animals that cant save themselves and restore some balance to the ecosystem by making it illegal for cats to be outdoors if not on a leader. Thank you for taking the time to be apart of a much needed change.
