Why this petition matters

Started by Kyle Kajhiro

The State of Hawaiʻi leases to the U.S. Army more than 1400 acres of public trust land at Mākua Valley on Oʻahu and approximately 23,000 acres of public trust land at Pōhakuloa on Hawaiʻi Island, all for a mere $1 for 65 years.  In violation of the lease, the military has damaged the environment and Hawaiian sacred sites with live fire training. It has contaminated the land with unexploded ordnance and other toxins. Both Mākua and Pōhakuloa are considered to be a sacred places by Native Hawaiians who have been fighting for decades to stop the military desecration and begin the cleanup and restoration of these places.  The lease expires in 2029, but the Army has been pushing to renew the lease early. We call on Governor Ige of the State of Hawaiʻi and Chairperson Case of the Department of Land and Natural Resources to terminate the lease and begin the restoration of these lands.
