Why this petition matters

Started by Yvette Williams

The 14th of June 2021 marks four years since the Grenfell tower fire. The day after the fire, an inquiry was announced to investigate how and why it happened and who was responsible.  There is no guarantee that the recommendations of the inquiry will be made into law, allowing those responsible for the fire to get away with murder.

Public inquiries are meant to hold the government, and others, accountable. But right now, the Government doesn’t actually have to make any changes in response to what inquiries find out.  Lives are lost, people are investigated, statements are made...but absolutely nothing changes.

Since 1990, there have been 68 inquiries and only 6 had any follow up.

We, at Justice4Grenfell, have seen this for ourselves. The first phase of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry made 46 recommendations. The Government voted down an amendment to make these inquiry recommendations happen. After at least seventy two people died and four years have passed, nothing has changed.

What is worse is that many of these recommendations had been made in a previous Inquiry, the Lakanal House inquiry in 2009. If the findings from this had been implemented, Grenfell may never have happened.

With no current legal obligation to enforce Inquiry recommendations, the Government ignores them. The ability to choose to ignore these recommendations costs lives.

This Government has projected a green light onto Parliament and have said they think Grenfell is a tragedy. What is the point of any of this when they choose to ignore the actual, legal changes that we need to get justice? To make sure the preventable deaths that devastated our lives and communities never happen again.

The sad thing is that despite the time, money and heartache that went into them, Governments have consistently failed to take on board the lessons and stop lives being lost in the future.

Without a legal obligation to implement inquiry recommendations, they mean nothing. Join us in demanding that the Government be legally obligated to implement public inquiry recommendations to make sure preventable deaths, like those at Grenfell, never, ever happen again.
