The brave men and women who took an oath to serve and protect the city of Geneva, NY, and it’s citizens, are under attack. 

Not the “expected” attacks, such as being spit on, assaulted, called racial and homophobic slurs, called racist pigs, having their families threatened, their children bullied, and much, much worse... No, these recent attacks come from an unexpected place: Geneva City Council, the Mayor, and the City Manager. 

Cries from an agitator on the city council to “Defund the Police”, eccentric as it seems, is actually gaining traction. This is thanks to the lack of leadership on the part of the City Manager and the City Mayor. Their gentle and enabling approach towards the hateful, vile and downright disgusting way the officers of GPD have been treated over the past three weeks has jeopardized not only the safety of the city, but the safety of all Geneva Police officers. 

On May 30th, as police/protestor tensions ran high across the country, city councilwoman Laura Salamendra shared a video to her Facebook page. A video taken at a rally in Ithaca, NY which she attended the day before. During this video a sign was displayed twice as the camera panned across the crowd. This sign read clearly, in large letters, “Kill Cops”.

While loved ones of law enforcement feared for the safety of their officers, while police cars were set on fire, and police precincts burned. While stores were looted and owners beaten for attempting to protect their livelihood, a woman sat on Geneva City Council who promoted material calling for a hate crime. 

That is only the beginning. Many more examples of the enabling of bad behavior and the targeting of GPD by members of city government exist. Yet the officers hold their heads high with integrity, professionalism, and dignity while they continue to serve the people of Geneva.

Crazy as it is, the “Defund the Police” movement IS happening right here in Geneva. 

City government is using the COVID-19 pandemic, as an excuse to make cuts to GPD. They have asked officers to take a 5% pay cut from August until the end of December, want officers to lose the ability to cash in their earned vacation days, enacted a hiring freeze and, most recently, they have called to fire the two new recruits who have just completed the police academy. This CANNOT happen! 

Over the next year GPD stands to lose at least three officers due to retirement, etc. The city has also frozen all new hiring, leaving one position open. If the two new recruits are fired, that has the potential to leave AT LEAST 6 open positions at the Geneva Police Department. At full staff, the road patrol only has 23 officers (not including administration or detective positions). This means that, even before officers are out on injury or sickness, the city of Geneva will be over 25% SHORT on road officers, while continuing to serve almost 14,000 citizens. Not only does this put the safety of the city in jeopardy, but it puts the officer’s safety in jeopardy as well, and hinders their ability to successfully perform their duties as an officer. 

As it often goes, the true support behind the men and women of the Geneva Police Department is the silent majority. Honorable, hard working men and women who value the constitution, justice, and law and order.

Supportive voices of reason and common sense are drowned by the screaming and shouting of vulgarities and hatred towards our men and women in blue. 

City council should be DEFENDING our officers. Instead, “Back the Blue” signs were removed from the police department, as someone on council considered them offensive. 

This petition is meant to show council the outpouring of support, trust, and faith that we have in the men and women of the Geneva Police Department.

We DEMAND that the city council STOP any and all ridiculous calls to defund GPD. 

WE SUPPORT THE MEN AND WOMEN GENEVA POLICE DEPARTMENT! 

Los valientes hombres y mujeres que hicieron un juramento para servir y proteger la ciudad de Geneva, Nueva York, y sus ciudadanos, están bajo ataque.

No los ataques "esperados", como ser escupidos, asaltados, llamados insultos raciales y homofóbicos, llamados cerdos racistas, amenazar a sus familias, intimidar a sus hijos y mucho, mucho peor ... No, estos ataques recientes provienen de un lugar inesperado: el Ayuntamiento de Geneva, el alcalde y el administrador de la ciudad.

Los gritos de un agitador en el ayuntamiento para "Defund the Police", por excéntrico que parezca, en realidad están ganando terreno. Esto es gracias a la falta de liderazgo por parte del administrador de la ciudad y el alcalde de la ciudad. Su enfoque gentil y favorable hacia la odiosa, vil y francamente repugnante forma en que los oficiales de GPD han sido tratados durante las últimas tres semanas ha puesto en peligro no solo la seguridad de la ciudad, sino también la seguridad de todos los oficiales de policía de Geneva.

Loco como es, el movimiento "Defund the Police" está sucediendo aquí mismo en Geneva.
El gobierno de la ciudad está utilizando la pandemia COVID-19, como una excusa para hacer recortes a GPD. Han pedido a los oficiales que reduzcan su salario en un 5% desde agosto hasta fines de diciembre, quieren que los oficiales pierdan la capacidad de cobrar en sus días de vacaciones ganados, promulgaron un congelamiento de contratación y, más recientemente, llamaron para despedir a los dos nuevos reclutas que acaban de completar la academia de policía. El ayuntamiento debería DEFENDER a nuestros oficiales. En cambio, los letreros de "Back the Blue" fueron retirados del departamento de policía, ya que alguien del consejo los consideró ofensivos.
