Why this petition matters

Started by All So

Below are some of the concerns pointed out by users in the Google Maps help section.

> I visit areas without roads and cellphone networks so the default view is completely useless for me.

> At one time you were able to, I know as I have used it, the offline map size would be like 10G's why is this no longer available?  This saved a friend and me on a backcountry motorcycle enduro trip where we were about 80 miles in and got off route and because of the offline download I had we found our way back safely.

> I would also use this feature for my frequently visited cabin.  It seems like saving a limited view would not take that much space.  Maybe a slightly more compressed view than available live?

> It's insane how crappy Google maps is at the end of 2019. It doesn't cache one bit of satellite view EVER. You can look at the same small area of map 15 times in a day and it will have to download over cellular EVERY SINGLE TIME! This is complete stupidity and so slow and such a waste of time and bandwidth and of an opportunity to make useful software!!! For God sakes keep a cache amount and save satellite view data and even let the user specify a size of the allowed cache. I would set mine to 5 or 10GB.

> Such a feature could potentially save lives in places like Joshua Tree National Park because visitors get lost in the areas of giant boulders where the boulders are unique and distinguishable from satellite but can sometimes all look the same when you lose your way.

> Definitely useful about everywhere in Africa.

> Yeah this would be a stupidly useful thing, and I can't believe it's not possible. I do a ton of fieldwork in rural areas and have nearly gotten very, very lost without satellite imagery downloads. Luckily someone else had better service than me so we found our way out.
