The Victorian Government has announced plans to demolish 180 metres of the historic Flinders Pier on the Mornington Peninsula. The pier is one of the oldest and longest in Victoria, first built in 1864. Over the intervening years, the pier has been re-aligned and had pylons and treads replaced to keep it safe and operational. However, during the past decade, the Government has allowed the pier to fall into disrepair due to lack of maintenance. A substantial section is now closed to the public. The water beneath the pier is home to the Weedy Sea Dragon which feeds amongst the sea grasses. The Weedy Sea Dragon attracts divers and researchers from around the world. In his BBC documentary filmed at Flinders, Sir David Attenborough once observed that of all the creatures in the shallows of Southern Australia, "none compare to the beauty of the weedy sea dragon". He has since written a letter of support to the people of Flinders. Furthermore, while the Minister, Hon Melissa Horne has announced the demolition of the first 180 metres of the pier, her department was also considering a concrete boat ramp to facilitate jet skis and power boats in the shallow waters where the weedy sea dragon currently feeds. While the boat ramp has since been defeated, the pier remains at risk. Please help the Flinders Community Association save the historic Flinders Pier for its social and historic relevance to the early settlers of the Mornington Peninsula; preserve the pier and the surrounding waters as a safe harbour for the weedy sea dragon to survive and prosper; and ensure the historic timber pier is restored (as they do in South Australia) for the safe enjoyment of future Victorians.
