Why this petition matters

In Colorado, school funding is based on attendance in schools on a count day that takes place in October traditionally.

Parents are faced with the decision of schooling this year amid the coronavirus pandemic. In Colorado, most of us have the choice of sending our kids back to classrooms, using the districts 100% virtual option (which still is yet to be defined), or unenrolling from the district and homeschooling with a curriculum of their choice.

Many feel that homeschooling would be the best option for their families but are concerned about public schools losing funding due to lower enrollment. If students are not enrolled in either the district virtual option or the district in person option on count day in October then the schools will not receive funding for those students.

Schools are working hard to make a viable virtual option but these options are one size fits all and do not work for many family's lifestyles or work schedules. If parents are making the choice to keep their students home and choose to homeschool, we should not be penalizing the schools where these children will likely return.

I propose the state use the previous year enrollment counts to determine the funding for the 2020/2021 school year. Or find a way not to penalize schools for decreased enrollments due to the pandemic. What can be done to secure the future of public education in Colorado?
