We, the listeners of Los Angeles-based KSUR-AM 1260, known on air as L.A. Superhits 1260 K-Surf; are sad, angry, and heartbroken that the station has added 80s music to their playlist. This station started out in March 2017 with a 50s/60s-based format, branded as L.A. Oldies K-Surf.

We see this format tweak as a problem because when K-Surf debuted, it stood out from all other Los Angeles radio stations. Now K-Surf has homogenized itself and is like every other music station in the area. In 2020, people who want 80s music on terrestrial radio can tune to a myriad of FM stations, with better sound quality. Music from the 1980s on an AM station in this day and age is a solution looking for a problem, not the other way around. In other words, 80s music belongs on AM radio like meat and dairy belong on the menu at a vegan restaurant.

My solution is for station management to heed the negative feedback they are receiving, whether via Facebook or other means, and undo what they did. K-Surf is alienating its listeners, myself included.

I am only 33, but I still prefer the oldies of the 50s and 60s. I know people of all ages, even people in their 20s and 30s, who like this timeless music. To quote Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, “Today’s music ain’t got the same soul. I like that old time rock and roll.”
