Why this petition matters

Started by Stephanie Cervino

We are here because the new "SAT" and ACT testing deadline of July 31 to qualify for the FMS and FAS Bright Futures scholarship is not a victory. The Class of 2020 missed multiple opportunities to take both of these tests. The May and June SAT's were canceled nationally and the April, June, and July ACT test administrations were canceled for countless students.

The reason I put SAT in quotation marks is because there is absolutely no opportunity to take the SAT by July 31. There is one ACT test in July, but countless testing locations around Florida have canceled that exam as well.

Now, if the class of 2020 is able to locate an ACT testing location for July 18, we only have one last shot to take the ACT. Think of those students who have never even taken the ACT. Now we have to take a new test AND score high on our first try? What about those students whose July ACT testing location canceled the test and the students were unable to sign up at another location?

We cannot let these missed SAT and ACT testing opportunities go unnoticed. The new July 31 deadline puts the Class of 2020 at a very unjust disadvantage.

Personally, like many other students, I have only taken the SAT and needed just a few more points (20, to be exact). Now, the rest of the numerous students and I will have to take the ACT test for the first time AND score well.
This is not acceptable. Although, we can make justice happen with this petition.

The reason I ask the new testing deadline to be September 30, 2020 is because that gives the Class of 2020 two more tries for the ACT (July 18 and September 12) and two more tries for the SAT (August 26 and September 26). As I mentioned above, the May and June SAT's were canceled for all students, and numerous April, June, and July ACT test administrations were canceled as well.

Another option would be to waive test score requirements since not all students had an equal chance to test due to some locations canceling the administrations while others did not.

A pandemic RARELY happens. And when it does, extreme decisions must be made. The class of 2020 does not deserve what Bright Futures decided after what has already been taken from us because of this pandemic.
