Stop chronic explosions from farmers bird cannons in Niagara
Stop chronic explosions from farmers bird cannons in Niagara
Why this petition matters
THOUSANDS OF BLASTS are imposed upon residents of rural Niagara-on-the-Lake by farmers' explosive devices. The device, a propane cannon, is effective by startling and scaring wildlife such as bear, deer, coyote, birds, etc., away from consuming crops. The problem is that the explosions produce the same physiological effects in the human population. Some additional health effects of frequent and chronic blasts to the well-being of the community include increased heart rate, anxiety, difficulty to concentrate and, of significant concern, impacts children's ability to learn.
In recent years the number of vineyards has proliferated, spreading too close to existing residences, while at the same time the Town, in spite of its awareness of the chronic explosion conflict, has continued to issue development permits, which resulted in an increase from 230 homes to more than 1600 homes in just one of the areas of Niagara-on-the-Lake, namely St. Davids.
Convergence of Agricultural and Residential interests could have been resolved several years ago when the Town was receiving notice of negative impact from rural residents.
Since the vineyards and homes are already established there is just ONE solution. Farmers must use non-explosive wildlife deterrents!
