La comunidad de Tortuguero, en la costa Norte del Caribe de Costa Rica es una zona sumamente valiosa desde la perspectiva ecológica para nuestro país, lugar de anidación más importante del Atlántico de tortuga verde y otras especies de tortugas marinas, hábitat natural de muchas especies en vías de extinción como el jaguar y  manatí, conjunto de mosaicos de microclimas, ecosistemas y culturas.

Hoy, los habitantes de Tortuguero y su biodiversidad sienten que están a punto de perder la riqueza natural y la tranquilidad, debido a la construcción de una calle pública que daría acceso al tráfico rodado al área, destruyendo el Parque Nacional. Perjuicios para el ecosistema y la fauna, fragmentando el corredor ecológico que constituye, sin mencionar el incremento del vandalismo, la cacería  y narcotráfico en las comunidades de Tortuguero y San Francisco, así como el aumento de desechos sólidos, cuya gestión  actualmente roza su capacidad de carga.

El ministerio de Ambiente y Energía, a través del área de conservación Tortuguero, en múltiples ocasiones ha logrado evitar el uso de un camino abierto por parte de la Municipalidad de Pococí, que pretende el acceso rápido a través del Parque nacional, para llegar hasta la comunidad de Tortuguero, pero la obra sigue adelante.

Necesitamos actuar, no podemos permitir ver cómo Tortuguero se desintegra. Es nuestro deber luchar por el patrimonio de la humanidad y más aún la herencia de nuestros hijos.

 Unamos fuerzas y digamos No a la Calle Pública.

The Tortuguero National Park, on the north coast of the Caribbean of Costa Rica is an extremely valuable area from an ecological perspective. It's the most important nesting place in the Atlantic for green sea turtle and other species of marine turtles as well as a natural habitat for many threatened species such as the jaguar and manatee. It is also a diverse mosaic of microclimates, ecosystems and cultures.

Today, the inhabitants of Tortuguero along with its wealth of flora and fauna are threatened by the construction of a road that would cut through the National Park. This would cause untold damage to the ecosystem and fragment the important biological corridor that it forms. A road would encourage illegal hunting, fishing, logging and would help the flow of all types of contraband between the coastal communities of Tortuguero and San Francisco with the interior. Increased access to the area via a road would also increase the amount of solid waste in the area for which management of such wastes currently borders on its present handling capacity.

The Ministry of Environment and Energy, through the Tortuguero Conservation Area, has repeatedly managed via the Constitutional court system to avoid the opening of the road which is backed by the Municipality of Pococí and a group of interested parties in the interior. This group has since launched an administrative dispute against the park administration and it is presently before the courts.

We need to act now. We cannot allow this disintegration of the national park and its rich biodiversity. It is our duty to fight for our national heritage, for all Costa Ricans and for the generations of the future.
