Save Ontario’s food and farms from disappearing forever
Save Ontario’s food and farms from disappearing forever
Why this petition matters
Ontario is losing 175 acres of farmland every day to urban development.
Every day. It’s a concerning number.
The land that supports our food production is a finite resource. Now it's under threat from major urban development.
Once a farm is turned into a shopping centre, or warehouse, or subdivision, it will never be a farm again. We lose the food that was grown on that land permanently.
Significant wetlands, key shorelines, and forests are threatened by urban sprawl. We have to protect our landscapes and water before we lose it to development.
Government intervention is key.
The government has a big say over where and how urban development happens. MZOs (Minister's Zoning Orders) exacerbate the problem, bypassing long-standing processes intended to protect farmland.
And they are being used today more than ever.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, an MZO has been used 6 times to rezone farmland for urban use. This is added pressure Ontario farms simply don’t need. Our farms. Our food. Our health. Our environment. Our wildlife. Our future. They’re all connected.
Please help us save our food and farms before it's too late.
