Why this petition matters

Started by Emil Tiedemann

Joey Moss is an important figure not just in the Edmonton sports community (as a locker room attendant with both the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Football Team), but throughout the entire country for his advocacy for inclusivity and especially those with Down Syndrome. He was also a role model to everyone who knew him, including "The Great One" himself, Wayne Gretzky, who first brought him to the Oilers organization back in 1984. And of course, Joey was a proud Edmontonian who made all of us proud of HIM...for his enthusiasm, allegiance, perseverance, tenacity, motivational spirit, and his refusal to allow his disability to hold him back.

Sadly, Joey passed away on October 26, 2020 at the age of 57. He deserves to have his name honoured somehow, whether it be a banner, a statue, or the renaming of the Downtown Community Arena. It is a community hockey arena in Edmonton...Joey just so happened to represent community, hockey, and Edmonton. Seems like a perfect fit.

Thanks to an idea from @McOilers (and others) on Twitter, let's get the City of Edmonton to rename the Downtown Community Arena as the Joey Moss Community Arena!

#RIPJoeyMoss
