Dear St John's College,

On Monday night, after a three-day-long recording session, St John’s Voices (SJV) received written notice from the College that the choir will be disbanded in June 2024. We are devastated by this decision, which we believe is a fundamentally regressive move for the College, the choral community in Cambridge, and the wider arts provision for women in the UK. You announced this decision as part of an initiative which allegedly intends ‘to adopt a broader approach to the provision of co-curricular opportunities in music for our students, including in different genres,’ but, as yet, no details have been offered about what this ‘broader approach’ might entail. Terminating SJV will leave over 30 members without a choir, its Director redundant, and a hole in the musical life of the College and the wider University.

The most troubling aspect of this decision is the destruction of choral opportunities for female and non-binary singers at St John’s. On April 29th 2022, when our sister choir (St John’s College Choir - hereafter SJCC) announced its plans to begin admitting women, the College proudly stated on their website:

Extending membership to talented female singers creates an exceptional new musical opportunity for women and girls.

Two years later, SJCC has only one student member who identifies as female, whereas SJV has 14, each of whom is losing her opportunity to sing in the College chapel. St John’s College has a near 400-year history of choral music; only in the last eleven years, since the creation of St John’s Voices in 2013, has that tradition been accessible to women. A British choral tradition with equal opportunities is something that St John’s should be championing, not looking to diminish. It is upsetting that a remarkable step forward in the choral world (the admission of female singers into SJCC) has been weaponised against the very existence of another ensemble, supposedly in the name of broadening opportunities. The two choirs complement each other by offering a diverse range of choral provision within the college and widening the participation of students in chapel life. Disbanding the College’s more accessible choir will deter young musicians from applying to St John’s, and it has already harmed the public image of the College; several Old Johnians have cancelled their regular donations in response.

We believe that your decision-making process was unreasonable, and does not align with your stated aim of acting in the interest of St John’s students. The students were only consulted two weeks ago, at a meeting which the Johnian members of SJV had to request for themselves. During this meeting, you explained that the College Review of Music had called for further investigation into SJV, but that you were unwilling to engage with this recommendation. Although you appeared to offer those present a chance to share their thoughts, we have since learnt that the College had already decided to disband the choir by this date. Given the success, support and momentum of the choir, they should have received an invitation to the discussion in the first place, rather than an immediate axing.

St John’s Voices, now in its eleventh year, has achieved worldwide musical acclaim. The choir has completed three recordings with Naxos, a broadcast on BBC Radio 3, performed regular concerts and international tours, and has amassed over 2.3 million likes on social media. These achievements represent the success of the choir both musically and socially; how it embodies the College’s commitment to provide for students ‘a diverse, friendly and lively environment where they can exceed their own expectations’. In an increasingly stressed and anxious city, SJV offers an essential service of mental wellbeing to the College; Graham Walker (Director of SJV) values student welfare as highly as musical excellence. The unique and low-commitment schedule of the choir allows even the busiest students to sing alongside their academic and other co-curricular commitments. The choir also plays a vital pedagogical role in the College, providing mentorship and career development in arts-related fields. This has enabled members who had previously had reduced access to choral opportunities to pursue their art after university.

We are calling upon you, the College leadership, to revoke this decision and to allow St John’s Voices to continue singing Evensong under Graham’s directorship on Mondays in term time. Disbanding the choir will dramatically reduce the opportunity for College students to engage in quality music and worship in their own chapel, it will cut the number of female students who sing in the chapel from 15 to 1, and it will significantly diminish the presence of St John’s in the Cambridge choral scene.

Over the last 11 years, St John’s Voices has provided a family to hundreds of students, and an immeasurable contribution to choral music. The loss of this choir would be a devastation.

Yours sincerely,
St John’s Voices and its supporters
