Parrotfish, are a colorful group of fish that are found in coral reefs, rocky coasts, and seagrass beds, they play a significant role in bioerosion and are essential to our marine ecosystem. Parrot fish make up to 85% of the sand on our beaches, one single adult parrot fish can make up to 800 pounds of sand in its life time, So naturally they play a vital role to our tourist based economy which generates close to US$3 billon annually from tourism and fisheries . Parrot fish directly saves Caribbean coral reefs from being overgrown with seaweed and sponges as they perform the task of scraping and cleaning inshore coral reefs which is how they produce the sand that makes our beaches so famously world renowned. So why are we not doing more to protect these extremely useful and beautiful creatures. With natural predators like the lion fish the numbers of this species is dwindling almost to the point of extinction that is not even factoring in the over fishing from humans. If parrot fish making sand isn’t enough for you to sign, the number 1# thing we can do to protect coral reef is to protect parrot fish and why should we protect coral reefs? Besides it being home to many fish species they protect coastlines from tropical storms and are important sources of medicine for Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and viruses.
