NBC, Scrap the Skycam for Notre Dame Football
Why this petition matters
We, the undersigned, demand that NBC Sports, which carries Notre Dame home football games, scrap the use of the "Skycam" as the main camera for live action and return to traditional camera usage. NBC Sports producer Rob Hyland claims that the Skycam brings viewers closer to the action. He is wrong on several counts:
1) Although the camera may be physically closer to the action, the players actually look farther away.
2) The farther the players are from the camera, the more distorted in size they become.
3) The action looks like you're looking through some prescription glasses that are designed to cure a bad case of astigmatism. The action looks nothing like it would in watching it live.
4) When watching a game live, you watch from one vantage point; you don't move around. As such, having a moving view during live action is disorienting. Hyland is attempting to fix something that isn't broken.
As such, we call on NBC Sports to abandon the use of the Skycam for live game action, as it severely compromises our enjoyment of Notre Dame football on NBC, and is likely to lead some, if not many, loyal viewers to abandon watching Notre Dame football on NBC.
