Petition to: His Excellency – The Reverend Bishop Sithembele Sipuka and the Archbishops and Bishops of the SACBC

The past year has proven particularly difficult for our country, many have lost loved ones to the pandemic, many are also suffering financially as a result of the economic impacts the lockdowns have had. Recently we have seen violence break out in our country and an attempted revolutionary coup against the ruling party. This has already resulted in the tragic loss of life and livelihoods. A revolutionary coup would only further harm the people of our country and the disrupt the South African democracy.

It has been the common practice for the Christian faithful in times of difficulty, war, plague and pestilence to have recourse to Our Heavenly Mother and Queen, in order to seek Her maternal protection and comfort, and to do so through acts of public devotion which demonstrate our filial love for Her. The Christian faithful have also turned to the Sacred Heart of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of all Charity in difficult times, this was the case in Ecuador on March 25, 1874, when the President solemnly consecrated Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Prior to the French Revolution Our Blessed Lord asked the King to consecrate France to the Sacred Heart, which he delayed to do. This made the revolution unavoidable.

Consecrations are often repeated, as the world has been consecrated to the Immaculate Heart several times by Popes: Pius XII (1942), John Paul II (1984) and Francis (2013). The Italian Episcopal conference also repeated the consecration of Italy on the 1st of May 2020. It was done on the 13th of September 1953.

We believe such a consecration will provide both spiritual and temporal protection for the Church during this tumultuous time. We have seen the destruction of other religious structures during the unrest.

Therefore, we, the under-signed, in conformity with the obligations and rights of the Christian faithful (In terms of Canon 212, § 2 of the Code of Canon law), humbly petition you to consecrate, in a public manner, South Africa to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

If we may humbly request, in addition, that each Archdiocese or Diocese be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

By these Acts we wish to invoke the Blessed Virgin Mary’s protection and plead with Her to intercede for our country, our families, and ourselves before Almighty God to bring an end to the current unrest and the Covid-19 pandemic currently threating our country and its people.

Yours Faithfully,
Immaculata South Africa and the undersigned
