Klimaschutz ist Teamsport, alle müssen ran und ihr Bestes geben.

In Vor-Coronazeiten führten Spieltage der Bundesliga, des DFB-Pokals und der Nationalmannschaft zu erheblichen Belastungen für Klima und Umwelt [1].

Tonnenweise Müll und Abfall, der Konsum in den Stadien, die An- & Abreise der Fans führten jeden Spieltag zu einem gigantischen CO2-Fußabdruck von über 7.500 Tonnen CO2. Noch sind aufgrund der Pandemie keine Zuschauer zugelassen. Durch einen möglichen Impfstoff besteht die Aussicht, dass die Stadien mittelfristig wieder gut gefühlt sein werden. Ein ligaweites verbindliches Konzept zum Klima- und Umweltschutz fehlt und wird auch in der DFL nicht diskutiert. Auch für Länderspiele der Nationalmannschaft fehlt ein schlüssiges ganzheitliches Konzept.

Die Antwort auf meinen Appell für einen "verbindlichen Klima- und Umweltschutz im Profifußball" blieb entweder aus (DFL), ging am Thema vorbei (DFL Stiftung) oder stellte sich rückblickend lediglich als reine Absichtserklärungen (DFB) heraus [2].

Deshalb fordere ich die DFL, DFL-Stiftung und den DFB dringend auf, endlich einen verbindlichen & weitreichenden Klima- und Umweltschutz im Profifußball zu etablieren.

Damit sich der Profi-Fußball dem Klimawandel entgegenstellt und seiner gesellschaftliche Verantwortung gerecht werden kann, müssen unter anderem folgende Forderungen umgesetzt werden:

1. Der DFB, die DFL und ihre Vereine der 1. und 2. Bundesliga verpflichten sich dem 1,5 Grad-Ziel des Pariser Klimaschutzabkommens:
   - sie erstellen CO2-Bilanzen und arbeiten aktiv an wissenschaftsbasierten CO2-Reduktionspfaden im Rahmen der Science Based Targets Initiative
   - sie kompensieren zeitnah alle nicht vermeidbaren Emissionen (Scope 1, Scope 2 und Scope 3 Emissionen)
2. Die DFL und die Vereine der 1. und 2. Bundesliga unterzeichnen das UN Sports for Climate Action Frameworks [3].
3. Die DFL bündelt alle Aktivitäten in einem ganzheitlichen Umwelt-Konzept und verankert strikte & ligaweit verbindliche Vorgaben zum Klima- und Umweltschutz in den Lizenzbestimmungen.
4. Die Finanzierung der Umwelt- und Klimaschutzprojekte erfolgt über einen Teil der Fernsehgelder zweckgebunden und unabhängig vom Tabellenstand der Vereine. Abstiege dürfen nicht dazu führen, dass erreichte Standards zurückgefahren werden.
5. Die Auflagen enthalten ligaweite Mindeststandards zur Schonung von Ressourcen (Mehrwegbechersystem, ...), Verringerung der Emissionen (optional buchbares ÖPNV-Kombiticket, ...) und CO2-Kompensation (Aufforstung über den Ticketverkauf => freiwilliges Klimaticket) enthalten.
6. Die DFL und alle notwendigen Dienstleister erarbeiten zusammen mit Vertretern der Fanbasis an Konzepte zur klima- und fanfreundlichen Mobilität an Spieltagen.
7. Die DFL-Stiftung ändert ihre Satzung, damit Leuchtturm-Projekte in den Bundesliga-Vereinen auch im Bereich des Klima- und Umweltschutzes durchgeführt werden können.
8. Bei Heimspielen der DFB-Nationalmannschaft und allen Spielen der EURO 2024 erfolgt obligatorisch eine CO2-Kompensation durch Aufforstung über die Eintrittskarte (#JedesTicket2Bäume [4]) bei gleichbleibenden Ticketpreisen.
9. Die DFL und der DFB legen fest, dass eine Sponsoren-Partnerschaft mit dem DFB oder der DFL erst nach Beitritt der Science Based Tragets Initiative möglich wird.
10. Die Konzepte zum Klima- und Umweltschutz und deren Umsetzung werden fortlaufend von einer unabhängigen Stelle geprüft und bewertet. Der DFB und die DFL setzen die Verbesserungsvorschläge in Absprache mit den Vertretern der Fanbasis um.

*Update*
Die DFL hat Anfang Februar das Abschlußpapier zur "Taskforce Zukunft Profifußball" vorgestellt. Zwar wurde im Rahmen der ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit das Fernziel CO2-Neutralität formuliert - für die aktuelle ökologische Realität enthält das schwammig formulierte Papier aber zu viel "sollte", "kann" und "könnte".

Es fehlen ein Bekenntnis zum 1,5-Grad-Ziel, ein konkreter Maßnahmenkatalog zur Reduktion & Kompensation von Emissionen und vor allem ein verbindlicher Plan zur Finanzierung und zeitnahen Umsetzung von Maßnahmen [6].

Ziel dieser Petition ist es den, von der "Taskforce Zukunft Profifußball" [5] angestoßenen, Reform-Prozess kritisch zu begleiten, damit der Klima- und Umweltschutz nicht zu kurz kommt. Das DFL-Präsidium muss dazu zu bewegt werden, einen entsprechenden Antrag in einer DFL-Mitgliederversammlung – in der alle 36 Clubs vertreten sind - zu stellen, damit sich die Vereine auf höchster Ebene mit den Inhalten der Petition auseinandersetzen und darüber entscheiden.

Es ist ein wichtiger Zeitpunkt öffentlichen Druck zu erzeugen - daher ist Eure Stimme sehr wichtig.

Climate protection is a team sport, everyone has to go for it and give their best.

In pre-corona times, matchdays of the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal and the national team resulted in considerable burdens on the climate and environment [1].

Tons of rubbish and waste, the consumption in the stadiums, the arrival and departure of the fans led to a gigantic CO2 footprint of over 7,500 tons of CO2 every match day. Due to the pandemic, no spectators have been admitted yet. With a possible vaccine, there is a chance that the stadiums will feel good again in the medium term. A league-wide binding concept for climate and environmental protection is missing and is not being discussed by the DFL. There is also no conclusive holistic concept for international matches of the national team.

The response to my appeal for "binding climate and environmental protection in professional football" either failed to materialise (DFL), missed the point (DFL Foundation) or in retrospect turned out to be merely declarations of intent (DFB) [2].

I therefore urge the DFL, the DFL Foundation and the DFB to finally establish binding and far-reaching climate and environmental protection in professional football.

In order for professional football to tackle climate change and meet its social responsibilities, the following demands, among others, must be implemented:

1. The DFB, the DFL and its 1st and 2nd Bundesliga clubs are committed to the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Climate Protection Convention:
   - they draw up CO2 balances and are actively working on science-based CO2 reduction paths as part of the Science Based Targets initiative
   - they promptly compensate for all unavoidable emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3 emissions)
2. The DFL and the clubs of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga sign the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework [3].
3. The DFL bundles all activities in a holistic environmental concept and anchors strict and league-wide binding climate and environmental protection requirements in its licence conditions.
4. The environmental and climate protection projects are financed via a portion of the television funds, which is earmarked for a specific purpose and does not depend of the ranking list in the league. Descents must not lead to the reduction of achieved standards.
5. The conditions contain league-wide minimum standards for the conservation of resources (returnable cup system, ...), reduction of emissions (optionally bookable public transport combi-ticket, ...) and CO2 compensation (reforestation through ticket sales => voluntary climate ticket).
6. The DFL and all necessary service providers will work together with representatives of the fan base to develop concepts for climate- and fan-friendly mobility on match days.
7. The DFL Foundation is amending its statutes so that lighthouse projects in the Bundesliga clubs can also be implemented in the area of climate and environmental protection.
8. For home matches of the DFB national team and all EURO 2024 matches, CO2 compensation is obligatory through reforestation via the admission ticket (#EveryTicket2Trees [4]) at the same ticket prices.
9. The DFL and the DFB stipulate that a sponsorship partnership with the DFB or the DFL will only be possible after the Science Based Tragets Initiative has joined.
10. The concepts for climate and environmental protection and their implementation are continuously reviewed and evaluated by an independent body. The DFB and the DFL implement the proposed improvements in consultation with the fan base representatives.

*Update*
At the beginning of February, the DFL presented the final paper of the "Taskforce Future of Professional Football". Although the long-term goal of CO2 neutrality was formulated within the framework of ecological sustainability, the vaguely worded paper contains too many "shoulds", "cans" and "coulds" for the current ecological reality.

It lacks a commitment to the 1.5 degree target, a concrete catalogue of measures to reduce & compensate for emissions and, above all, a binding plan for the financing and timely implementation of measures [6].

The aim of this petition is to critically accompany the reform process initiated by the "Taskforce Future of Professional Football" [5] so that climate and environmental protection are not neglected. The DFL presidium must be persuaded to submit a corresponding motion to a DFL general meeting - in which all 36 clubs are represented - so that the clubs deal with the contents of the petition at the highest level and decide on it.

It is an important time to create public pressure - therefore your voice is very important.
