Why this petition matters

Started by Brklyn W

Shantel Davis, born May 26, 1989,
was a 23-year-old African American woman living in East Flatbush, Brooklyn.

A loving sister, niece, daughter, auntie, and friend,
Shantel was known for her warm and contagious smile that shined as bright as day.

She adored animals, loved cooking, and devoted much of her childhood and teenage years to the church Sunday school.

She had strength of character, came from a loving family, was kindhearted, generous, and had an enormous heart.

Shantel was a beautiful young woman with great promise.

On June 14th, 2012 Shantel was brutally shot and killed by narcotics Detective Philip Atkins while sitting in the drivers seat of her vehicle with the airbag deployed.

Known in the community as "Bad Boy Atkins",
the cop who killed Shantel has a history of intimidation and the use of excessive force.
Six federal civil rights lawsuits have been filed against him.

While the NYPD has tried to use her alleged criminal history to smear her name, Shantel was never convicted of a single crime.

Hours before she was killed, Shantel was online looking up a GED class to enroll in.

Shantel's untimely death has become a call to life for our community;
through her ending is a new beginning.

In Shantel's name, her family, friends, and community have come together to support youth in the community,
to make connections between Shantel's death and other cases,
and to support other families who've lost loved ones to police violence.
