Why this petition matters

Started by Amber Brose

The Native American mascot of the Southern York County School District needs to change. The current figurehead of our community should under no circumstances be a race of people. Native Americans have endured countless acts of disrespect and dehumanization throughout American history, and we add to this disrespect by reducing their culture to something that can be cheered at during football games. In addition, the use of terms such as "The Tribe" for our student section is cultural appropriation. Do not let the so-called "legacy" of this school district be racism. The best way to show that the Susquehannock community truly has a dedication to education is by learning from our mistakes and striving to do better in the future.
