Why this petition matters

Started by Sophie Kunin

In order to preserve the health of the Lawrence community, in addition to creating a safe and welcoming learning environment for students, KU must require students and faculty to show proof of Covid-19 vaccination or wear a mask.

Students and faculty may get documentation stating their health issue to opt out of wearing a mask and/or receiving Covid-19 vaccination. This petition was written to be set in place until the majority of the population was vaccinated (70%). Students without health conditions, who don't receive the vaccine would only be enforced to wear masks until it is safe.

As shown last year at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, students have frequently not worn masks. In order to create a safe environment for students, faculty, their families, and the Lawrence community, the university must insist upon vaccination. The KU community shares resources throughout its various campuses. Therefore, students have already been required to get immunizations before attending KU (example: MMR: measles, mumps, rubella).

Currently, hundreds of public universities and private colleges in the United States are requiring Covid-19 vaccinations before the fall semester; yet, KU has remained silent. Even if the University of Kansas states it is waiting for FDA approval of the emergency vaccines, Covid-19 vaccinations are not likely to be approved by August. As a result, requirements are needed right now to protect KU persons and the Lawrence community. Students are not required to attend KU and choose to live in the city of Lawrence. As a result, health, safety and the learning environment must be thought of first.
