I have been against the idea of a #LockTheClock petition in the past because they never seem to do any good. The concept of fixing Daylight Saving Time is just a bit complicated, and the petitions always oversimplify it.

But now we have real momentum on our side. As of this moment, 11 different states have taken action, and another 30 or so are considering it.

Nearly all of those bills, however, need federal enacting legislation. The good news is that there is just such a bill that has been introduced, and has broad bipartisan support.

The bad news is that the bill hasn't even been able to get a hearing.

Why is that?

It's not clear. The committee is the Senate Commerce Committee, chaired by Sen. Roger Wicker. 

He's a Republican from Mississippi.

• We don't think he's against it for partisan reasons -- after all the main sponsor is fellow Republican Sen. Marco Rubio.
• We don't think he's against it for local reasons -- the other senator from Mississippi is also a co-sponsor.
• We don't think he's against it for popularity reasons -- the Mississippi legislature has nine bills on this topic, and polls in Mississippi mirror those around the nation: Everyone wants the clock changing to stop, and a wide majority of people prefer the time we use in the summer.
• We certainly don't think he's against it for health reasons -- all the research is that the clock changing is truly deadly.

In short, we think the bill hasn't gotten a hearing because he just hasn't heard about it. This bill isn't on his radar.

So that's the reason for this petition. We want to show him that the people of Mississippi, and people all over this country, think that the Sunshine Protection Act should at least get a hearing so that we can begin the legislative process on this important piece of public health and safety legislation.
