Why this petition matters

Started by Clyde Carey

A few years ago, Steinberg discontinued the right to develop for VST2 unless the developer signed a license by a certain time, which many missed and many were not even aware of. At the time it may not have seemed like a big deal as we could sensibly expect that VST3 could do everything VST2 could and more, but such was not the case.

VST3 has been a nightmare for developers and end users alike when it comes to MIDI input and output. VST2 worked fine. This was just an artificial limit, which serves neither the developers or end users in any good way to forbid the development of VST2.

Many of us still believe VST3 will be fixed eventually, although many posts from Steinberg employees seem to indicate that they do not believe VST is for MIDI at all. Either way, it will be a long time before even a working VST3 is implemented in all DAWs even if Steinberg decides to fix it. We have a working solution right now in VST2 and nothing but an artificial legal limitation stopping it at the moment.

We ask that Steinberg and Yamaha please allow development of VST2 plugins for all developers again.
