North Cowichan approved the installation of two new cell towers on the 2nd of February, 2021. One for Evans Park, and the other for Mt. Tzouhalem Parking Lot.

The CVRD has also approved a new cell tower for 1345 Fisher Rd. (Source: Wednesday, Feb 10. Board Meeting).

Recently, more than ever, concerns about possible negative health impacts of cell towers and technologies that use RF waves have been dismissed as "conspiracy" despite a lack of adequate safety studies that prove safety, and despite hundreds of scientists from over 40 nations, who study in the field of non-ionizing radiation, coming forward with concerns.

As of October 15, 2019, 252 scientists from 43 nations had signed this Appeal:

"Numerous recent scientific publications have shown that EMF affects living organisms at levels well below most international and national guidelines. Effects include increased cancer risk, cellular stress, increase in harmful free radicals, genetic damages, structural and functional changes of the reproductive system, learning and memory deficits, neurological disorders, and negative impacts on general well-being in humans. Another new study from Brazil reports that the higher the EMF exposure level, the higher the rate of cancer mortality. In cities where there were many cell transmitters close to residences the mortality rate was the highest for all types of cancers but especially for breast, cervix, lung, and esophagus cancers. And Dr. Belpoggi of the Ramazzini Institute study of 2018 stated "No new infrastructure should be erected now given what we now know," https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0013935118300367

The study concluded that:
"The RI findings on far field exposure to RFR are consistent with and reinforce the results of the NTP study on near field exposure, as both reported an increase in the incidence of tumors of the brain and heart in RFR-exposed Sprague-Dawley rats. These tumors are of the same histotype of those observed in some epidemiological studies on cell phone users. These experimental studies provide sufficient evidence to call for the re-evaluation of IARC conclusions regarding the carcinogenic potential of RFR in humans."

If we believe cell towers and EMF technology is safe, why do we believe this? Is it based on facts? Or is it based on the carefully crafted messages of the industry's public relations campaigns which are meant to suppress real science, intimidate critics and capture regulatory bodies? 

The legacies of lead, asbestos, thalidomide, DDT, tobacco and the like should have us all understanding by now that just because an industry is regulated, does not mean they are above scrutiny or without the need for transparency or immune to conflicts of interest or fraud. We need to continue to question industry and hold them accountable.

Because the proposed tower in Evans park will be close to both Mt Prevost School and Drinkwater school and there are concerns re children's health and development with proximity to cell towers, this issue deserves immediate attention. https://ehtrust.org/cell-tower-proposed-near-home-childs-school-need-scientific-resources-health-safety/

The municipalities need to do their due diligence and remember that it is public health and safety that should come first, above industry pressure and excitement for technological advancements. 

We the undersigned citizens of the Cowichan Valley request that the Municipality of North Cowichan meet again re the proposed Rogers towers asap and tell Rogers that this proposal must be postponed until a thorough discussion process has been done with concerned citizens.
