마크 렘지어 교수의 역사 왜곡 논문 철회 촉구 및 규탄

뉴욕, 뉴저지, 펜실바니아, 커네티컷, 매사추세츠, 델라웨어 등지에 한인회 연합으로 활동하고 있는 미동북한인회연합회와 더불어 아래 한인회들은 일본군 위안부 피해자를 매춘부로 규정한 마크 렘지어 하버드대 로스쿨 교수의 역사 왜곡 논문을 강력히 규탄하며, 해당 논문의 즉각적인 철회와 함께 이에 따른 진정성 있는 사과를 촉구한다.

성노예인 일본군 위안부 문제는 대한민국을 포함해 피해를 당한 국가들에서 피해자들의 증언이 이어지고 있고, 유엔인권이사회에서도 일본이 위안부 동원에 대한 책임을 인정하고 사죄, 보상하라는 촉구가 나오는 등 이미 전 세계적으로 일본군 성노예 문제는 역사적 사실로 증명되고 있다.

이런 상황에 조선인 위안부가 성노예가 아니라 자발적인 매춘부인 것처럼 묘사하고, 일본 정부의 강요가 없었다는 주장이 담긴 마크 램지어 교수의 논문은 당시 일본군 성노예로 끌려가 모진 일을 당한 피해자들의 인권과 명예를 심각히 훼손하고 있는 일인 동시에 역사를 전면 부정하는 행위이다.

일본군 위안부 문제는 전쟁이라는 엄혹한 시기 여성에 자행된 지독한 인권 유린이자 무자비한 성폭력이다. 반드시 기억해 다시는 같은 일이 번복되지 않아야 하며, 결코 왜곡되서는 안 되는 부정할 수 없는 역사적 진실이다. 마크 램지어 교수는 지금이라도 오도 왜곡된 논문 철회와 이번 일로 상처를 입은 모든 분들께 진심어린 사과를 할 것을 다시 한 번 강력 촉구하는 바이다.

Statement

Condemn the Distorted Article by Ramseyer and Call for Its Withdrawal

The Federation of Korean American Associations of North Eastern USA and Korean American associations from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Delaware hereby strongly condemn the factually inaccurate and misleading article, ’Contracting for Sex in the Pacific War‘ by Harvard Law School Professor J. Mark Ramseyer and demand an apology along with the immediate withdrawal of his article.

Ramseyer's article portrays the Korean comfort women as voluntary prostitutes and claims that there was no coercion from the Japanese government.  This is not a truthful portrayal of these young women and girls who were forced into sexual slavery.  There are extensive researches by scholars and personal testimony from the comfort women victims conducted by international organizations such as the United Nations, which concluded that the comfort women were forcefully kidnapped and subjected to military sexual slavery by the Japanese government.

This use of Korean comfort women is a human rights violation and a war crime committed by the Japanese government.  Ramseyer’s rewriting of this historical truth minimizes the responsibility of the Japanese government and further victimizes the comfort women once again.

We, the Korean American associations representing 700,000 Koreans from the six states strongly condemn Ramseyer’s portrayal of the comfort women and demand immediate withdrawal of the article.  We stand with the comfort women and urge Ramseyer to apologize to the victims for whom his baseless claims have caused renewed painful trauma.
