Why this petition matters

Started by This Is Texas Freedom Force

This Is Texas Freedom Force respectfully submits the following.

NOT ONE INCH, DO NOT MOVE THE CENOTAPH!

This petition is strictly about the Alamo Cenotaph (The tomb of the Alamo Defenders).

The Texas GLO, San Antonio City Council & Alamo Advisory Committee wants to relocate the Alamo Cenotaph. This threatens to:

*Permanently damage the Alamo Cenotaph

*Disregard Land & Cenotaph deeds

*Disrespect the Alamo Defenders

The Alamo is the heart of Texas. It is the Shrine of Texas liberty, and the most important historical site in the Lone Star State. The Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836 is the key moment in Texas history, and one of the most pivotal battles in world history. The Texan identity of fighting for liberty, even against impossible odds and at the ultimate cost, begins at the Alamo.

Towering 60 feet high and located adjacent
to the surviving buildings of the Alamo itself,
San Antonio's "Alamo Cenotaph" pays tribute
to the men who died defending the ancient
mission in 1836 rather than surrender to
overwhelming odds.

Titled "The Spirit of Sacrifice," the Cenotaph
(or "empty tomb") was created by sculptor
Pompeo Coppini from a design envisioned
by architect Carlton Adams. Begun in 1937,
the Cenotaph took two years to complete and
is itself now a historical treasure.

According to tradition the Alamo Cenotaph
marks the spot where the slain defenders of
the fortified mission were piled after the
battle and burned in great funeral pyres. The
remains were later collected by local citizens
and today located in a marble casket at
nearby San Fernando Cathedral.

In the original Master Plan one of the key concepts was to relocate the Cenotaph. Knowing that the Alamo is the Texas Cradle of Liberty, it boggles the mind as to why the empty tomb memorializing the heroes of the Battle of the Alamo would be moved. It was the 13-day siege in 1836 that brought about Texas Independence. It is the men who chose to die for Liberty that shaped Texas’ freedom from the dictatorship of Mexico. The Battle for the Alamo is the reason Texas exists! It is the main reason we have so many visitors in San Antonio and Texas. Over 2.5M visitors a year come from all over the world to see where this Battle of Liberty took place. So to even contemplate moving a Texas shrine sits at the edge of betrayal to those that gave their lives. You don’t have to be a descendant just a diehard Texan or a Texan at heart to know that the Alamo Cenotaph must not be moved. And while the members of the committee may all agree....the people of Texas oppose this move. If you look at the The Alamo Master Plan, there is plenty of room for the Alamo Cenotaph to stand where it sits today. No one can deny that the Defenders of the Alamo died on the battlefield. This is precisely why the empty tomb should stand where it is to honor the Alamo Defenders.

Descendants of the Defenders, Die Hard Texans and many others are quite anxious and concerned and understandably upset about the fate of the Alamo Cenotaph. It could be because San Antonio is a known progressive city and has removed plaques from the courthouse, taken down a monument in Travis Park and robbed Robert E. Lee High School of its name, thus wiping out as much Civil War history from the city’s visibility. Why wouldn’t we be nervous? How does that old cliché go, "Out of Sight out of Mind"? It could also be that the elected General Land commissioner, George P. Bush, is sitting in his office surrounded by ‘pistoleros’ ready to shoot down any and all those who oppose his "reimagine Alamo master plan".

It’s safe to say that the City Of San Antonio, the GLO & The Alamo Advisory Committee have not been transparent throughout the entire process. We can all agree that they have not listened to the people of Texas. We ask you to say “NO” to moving the Alamo Cenotaph. #NotOneInch
