Step Out Against Melanoma
Why this petition matters
Become an agent of change and help us prevent another person from becoming a melanoma statistic. AIM intends to gather 200,340 signatures from people pledging to wear sunscreen every time they step outside.
Help us #StepOutAgainstMelanoma!
Why 200,340?
This year, an estimated 200,340 people will be diagnosed with melanoma—the most dangerous type of skin cancer—and 8,290 are expected to die from the disease. Melanoma is a disease that affects people of every age, gender, and ethnicity. But there is good news: It is also highly preventable.
If melanoma is found early, the chances of disease-free survival are excellent. If it’s found late, after it has spread to other organs, it is deadly.
The link between melanoma and sun—especially sunburn—is abundantly clear:
- The vast majority of melanomas are caused by UV exposure from the sun.
- Your risk for melanoma doubles if you’ve had more than five sunburns.
- One blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence more than doubles your chances of developing melanoma later in life.
Research is clear that UV rays are a major risk factor for developing melanoma. Sunscreen is an important way to reduce the likelihood of developing melanoma and other skin cancers. If you have concerns about any types of sunscreens, remember that there are many options on the market.
Until the number of deaths from melanoma is zero, we will not stop. Be part of the solution. We are all part of the cure. If you'd like to support our work, CLICK HERE to make a donation to AIM at Melanoma Foundation.
