Why this petition matters

Many people in the village of Keeseville say “Someone should do something about saving our historic bridges”.  Now is the time for everyone interested to voice their opinion.  It’s time to put politics aside, and let our voices be heard.  Essex County and Clinton County need to do what is right and restore our historic bridges.

Our 1878 Upper Bridge is the last remaining Double Span Metal Pratt Through Truss bridge built by Murray, Dougal, and Company in the world.  Click on the link "Why save the upper Bridge" to see our research.

Why save the Upper Bridge

The UpperBridge we all love was closed and scheduled for removal.  Through our efforts we have managed to stop this so far.  We don’t want it removed.  We would like both counties to do what they should have done years ago, which is agree to both fix the bridge and reopen it.  Engineers from across the country have agreed that it can be rehabilitated at far less of a cost than a new bridge, and reopened to traffic.

The 1890 Old State Road bridge is a local favorite and visited by many tourists.  It offers one of the best views in Upstate NY.  It is one of three remaining bridges of this type in the world, and built by the Groton Bridge Company.   If this bridge were to collapse it would fall into the chasm and cost so much more to get it out.  Please fix and reopen this bridge.  Click on the link "Why save the Old State Road Bridge" for our research on this bridge.

Why save the Old State Road Bridge

Our 1888 Swing Bridge is still open, but not maintained very well.   This is one of two suspension bridges of this type, built by the Berlin Iron Company of CT.  This gem will be the next bridge to close if it isn’t taken care of.  It is in desperate need of a paint job and minor repairs.   In 2021, we were able to get this bridge inspected for the first time since 2014, and while it is still safe, the engineering report showed significant paint loss, and minor repairs that still have not been addressed.

We have gems here that people want to see, and it’s time to give some time, effort, and money into fixing this historical landmarks.
