Why this petition matters

Started by Michael May

Our elected representatives have repeatedly demonstrated themselves to be a poor fit for the function they fulfil.  Not voting is an option for those of us so disillusioned we see no imperative to participate in the democratic process.  However, we would still like the ability to express our disdain of those who claim to represent us in parliament.  I therefore propose the inclusion of a "None of the Above" option on UK General Election ballot papers.  Parliamentary voting should then take place in two phases.  The first, as now, returning a simple majority for or against the motion under discussion.  The second then adding votes for those constituencies that returned no member of parliament (owing to a majority of "None of the Above" ballots) to the losing voice of the initial vote, potentially overturning it, but at least reducing its majority.  In this way those of us whose voices are drowned out by the current system will at least be heard, if only in the background.
