Why this petition matters

Started by Kirsten Madden

This petition is inspired and paraphrased from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action report & The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls final report.

Indigenous people should not be the only ones fighting for revitalization of Indigenous languages. It is imperative that all Canadians join together to demand that we recognize Aboriginal languages as a fundamental and valued element of Canadian culture and society, and there is an urgency to preserve them. We call upon all governments and all Canadians to recognize Indigenous languages as official languages, with the same status, recognition, and protection provided to French and English.

As a result of intentional assimilation policies that targeted Indigenous languages for extinction during colonization in Canada, Indigenous languages are in fact close to extinction. The loss of Indigenous languages is not an inevitable result of the modern world. "In 2016, only 12.5% of Indigenous Peoples spoke an Indigenous language as their mother tongue. III of the more than 70 Indigenous languages spoken in Canada, 25 languages have less than 500 fluent speakers" (National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, 2019, p. 100).

Please join in an effort to show solidarity, recognition and demand revitalization of Indigenous languages!
