HELP SAVE BEAUTIFUL HOUSES FROM GETTING TORN DOWN WHEN THERE ARE FAMILIES IN NEED.

Affordable housing is crucial for many families that can't afford or don't want to pay for new construction. The House Moving/Structural Relocation industry provides housing to many people, offers financing for them, and allows many to obtain a home that would not be able to afford it otherwise. Recycling houses, saving them from demolition, reduces landfill waste, and repurposes vacant property. The City of Houston has recently changed its interpretation of the existing house moving code, wanting the houses to be brought up to new code on all aspects, as new construction. This is a 1968 ordinance which the City of Houston has used for the last 50 plus years in such a way to regulate where the house would be moved to and how it is placed. It would be moved and placed to new code elevations, set-backs, foundation, driveways, etc. However, the house/building itself, the degree for restoration of same, was more to repair any deteriorated portion of the house to new code. The electrical, plumbing, and HVAC would be updated, the rest was moreover grandfathered in. This reinterpretation of the 1968 code will be cost prohibitive for most, lead to the loss of low-income housing, cause job losses, and goes against recycling.

There are families in need. Please sign this petition to help get the original interpretation of the code reinstated. EVERY VOICE SHOULD BE HEARD.
