Why this petition matters

Started by Chandler Smith

The hazardous chemical Styrene is known to cause cancer in humans and is deadly if leaked. The storage of Styrene will expose all Villa Hills and Northern Kentucky to a known carcinogen and increase the population’s risk of cancer. Please sign below to tell the Villa Hills Board of Adjustments that you oppose the storage of this dangerous chemical at the TransMontaigne Plant on Route 8.

The Villa Hills Board of Adjustments will vote on the storage of Styrene Monomer in the TransMontaigne Plant on Route 8 in Villa Hills, KY. Styrene is a liquid polymer substance listed as a carcinogen to humans. It is highly flammable with a flashpoint of 87.8 degrees fahrenheit and has established links to lymphohematopoietic cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, and genetic damage in the white blood cells, as well as evidence for increased risk of cancer in the pancreas or esophagus. If a leak occurs, Styrene gas is deadly and will sicken and displace thousands of Villa Hills, Ludlow, Bromley, Covington, and Northern KY residents.

The most recent Styrene disaster occurred on May 7, 2020 where thirteen people (including a 6-year-old) died and over 1000 people were hospitalized due to leaking styrene gas. Please read more about the leak here-- WARNING: THIS ARTICLE AND THE IMAGES IN IT DESCRIBING STYRENE POISONING ARE GRAPHIC AND DISTURBING. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/07/gas-leak-at-chemical-factory-in-india-kills-hospitalises-lg-polymers

The storage of Styrene will expose all Villa Hills and Northern Kentucky to a known carcinogen and increase the population’s risk of cancer. The TransMontaigne Plant, which is only monitored 42% of the time and unmonitored on the weekends, also poses a deadly risk in the event of a Styrene leak. TransMontaigne’s zoning application also requests approval for all future production of flammable and explosive chemicals on the Route 8 site without seeking approval from the board because seeking that approval is “time consuming and expensive”.

In addition to the serious long and short term, detrimental health effects caused by Styrene, Villa Hill’s property value will be greatly affected by the production of Styrene. Banks may be wary of granting mortgages to properties within close proximity of a chemical plant producing hazardous carcinogens.

We are petitioning again the storage of this human and environmental toxin at the TransMontaigne Plant and gathering signatures from residents who will be adversely affected if this hazardous chemical is approved for production in our area.

What We Want You to Do:

Please help us keep our families and community safe from the serious health effects and dangers brought with the storage of Styrene.

1.) Please sign this petition to voice your objection to the hazardous storage of styrene to the Villa Hills Board of Adjustments.

2.) Please email Craig Bohman at cbohman@villahillsky.org saying you oppose the storage of Styrene at the TransMontaigne Plant and ask that your email be added to the Board of Adjustments notes.
