The Coronavirus has affected this country and the people and businesses in it more than any of us could have every imagined.   Our government have been exemplary in stepping up and helping out with financial packages that cover most businesses and individuals so that we can ride the current storm and come out the other side. 

The Retail, Hospitality and Leisure sector has been given a 12 month rates holiday and access to a cash grant of up to £25,000. Many MOT stations and garages are small, independent businesses in premises that are classified as Light Industrial.  Many of them pay large rates bills.  They won't receive a rates holiday or be able to access a £25,000 grant. 

Their business has been terribly affected by Coronavirus and many fear for their livelihoods.  Yes, they have been told they can stay open for MOT, servicing and repairs, the vehicles that are still on the road must be kept safe. But no one needs to get an MOT for the next 6 months, there has been an extension granted to all light vehicles and people have been told to only leave their house for essential journeys. 

Unless they have an emergency problem, no one is going to the garage.  Many garages have changed their hours or closed completely. Their incomes have dropped dramatically.  They will still be expected to pay their rates and other business expenses.  It would make an enormous difference to these small and vulnerable businesses to be able to access the same rates holiday and grants as the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure industries, they are facing the same problems! 

I, hereby, petition the Secretary of State for Transport, Rt Hon Grant Schapps,  to acknowledge the very real concerns of the MOT industry that works for him on a daily basis and allow MOT stations to be added to the list of businesses that are to be granted a Business Rates holiday and access to a £25000 grant.
