Why this petition matters

Started by Novato Chamber

The Novato Chamber, the Downtown Novato Business Association, and BID Advisory Board have come out to strongly urge City Council to follow the California Minimum Wage Schedule instead of accelerating this increase by nearly 3 years. Local Novato businesses view minimum wage laws as a matter of statewide concern and are aware of the state mandates and timelines for increases in the minimum wage. The three year state timeline will allow businesses to make adjustments in their business plans to manage these increases resulting in less drastic impacts.  The proposed acceleration causes Novato businesses to bear an undue burden by making them less competitive with all other cities in Marin County and will likely result in the closure of small businesses — which are the cornerstone of our town.

Many experts believe that accelerating the wage schedule will also cause price increase that will fall on consumers and clients - who choose to do their business in Novato. This likely will cause additional retail and restaurant sales leakage, and potential investors to look to other communities to do their business. Novato businesses value their employees and take great pride in creating a positive working environment and paying over the minimum wage whenever possible — however this accelerated increase will put many of those jobs in jeopardy.

Once again, the DNBA, The BID Advisory Board and the Chamber are in support of complying with the existing timeline governing minimum wage increases already determined in state law.

I support the position of the Novato Chamber and DNBA in opposing accelerated increases in the minimum wage schedule.
