NO MINERIA EN ECUADOR, SI PROTECCION DEL QUILOTOA LOOP! (for English scroll down)

La zona del Quilotoa Loop, que comprende el Cantón Sigchos y los pueblos de Sigchos, Isinliví, Chugchilan, Guingopana, Malinguapamba, entre otros, situado en la Provincia de Cotopaxi, se encuentra en riesgo de explotación minera. El Ministerio de Ambiente ha otorgado las respectivas licencias, a la Empresa Nacional Minera, para iniciar la explotación Minera del sector con un área aproximada de 10,850 hectáreas.

La minería es una de las prácticas más depredadoras y contaminantes que puedan existir. Las consecuencias de la minería a gran escala serían devastadores; sobre todo por la contaminación de los recursos naturales, incluyendo nuestras fuentes de agua de los páramos que proveen agua a las comunidades del sector. Los daños al eco-sistema, la bio-diversidad y los paisajes de la zona serían irreversibles. Adicionalmente, la minería traería problemas socio-culturales, económicos y de salud de nuestras comunidades.

En los últimos años, el crecimiento del turismo en el área llamado “Quilotoa Loop” (#quilotoaloop) es evidente, y este sector ha llegado a ser reconocido nacional e internacionalmente por sus riquezas naturales y su patrimonio cultural. El desarrollo turístico también se vería seriamente afectado por la actividad minera.

¡Los páramos, bosques, ríos, nuestra cultura, costumbres y fiestas...somos campesinos, micro empresarios, artesanos y vivimos de nuestra tierra!

¡Todos los pueblos de la zona del Quilotoa Loop, estamos más unidos que nunca, en esta lucha para defender nuestro hogar! Mediante esta petición queremos hacernos escuchar y defender nuestro territorio, la dignidad como pueblo mestizo-indígena en el Ecuador y sobre todo nuestros derechos a un buen vivir, asimismo los derechos de nuestra “PachaMama” (#pachamama) la madre tierra definidos en la Constitución ecuatoriana.

Pedimos que las licencias otorgadas y cualquier intento de proyecto minero en nuestra región serán detenidos por completo. Pedimos que declaren a toda la zona del Quilotoa Loop, “Área libre de Minería y Reserva hidrica”. Queremos seguir desarrollando el Quilotoa Loop con alternativas más sustentables y amigables con nuestro ambiente y cultura, como son el eco-turismo, el turismo comunitario, la producción de artesanías y la agricultura.

The Quilotoa Loop area, which includes the Sigchos Canton and the towns of Sigchos, Isinliví, Chugchilan, Guingopana, Malinguapamba, amongst others, located in the Province of Cotopaxi, is at serious risk! The Ministry of Environment has granted the respective licenses, to the National Mining Company, to start the mining of the sector with an area of ​​approximately 13,000 hectares.

Mining is one of the most devastating and polluting practices that may exist. The consequences of large-scale mining will be devastating; especially because of the contamination of natural resources, including the water resources that come from high altitude grasslands providing water to the communities of our sector. The damage to the eco-system, the bio-diversity and the landscapes of the area will be irreversible. Additionally, mining would bring socio-cultural, economic and health problems to our communities.

In recent years, the growth of tourism in the area called “Quilotoa Loop” (#quilotoaloop) is evident, and this sector has become recognized nationally and internationally for its natural wealth and cultural heritage. Tourism development would also be seriously affected by mining activity.

The paramo landscapes, forests, rivers, our culture, customs and festivals ... we are farmers, micro entrepreneurs, artisans and we live on and from our land!

We, the people of the Quilotoa Loop area, are more united than ever, in this fight to defend our home from mining activity! Through this petition we want to make ourselves heard and defend our territory, our dignity as mestizo-indigenous people in Ecuador, and, above all, our rights to good and healthy living conditions, also the rights of our "PachaMama" (#pachamama) mother earth defined in the Ecuadorian Constitution.

We ask that the licenses granted and any attempt at a mining project in our region be completely stopped. We ask the entire Quilotoa Loop area, to be declared a “Mining Free Zone and water reserve”. We want to continue developing the Quilotoa Loop with more sustainable alternatives that are friendly to our environment and culture, such as eco-tourism, community tourism, the production of handicrafts and agriculture.
