Why this petition matters

Started by Kathleen Espiritu

The Amazon rainforest is known as “The World’s Lungs” producing at least 20% of the world’s oxygen. The rainforest filled with known and unknown flora and fauna has been burning for at least three weeks now due to drought and possibly human activity.

People came together for Notre Dame to rebuild the church, let’s stop the fire and rebuild this important forest.

I am contacting Jeff Bezos, “The World’s Richest People” (Wikipedia) with the signatures along with the Brazilian government and other conservation groups in hopes that they can work together to put out the fire. Considering Jeff Bezos is THE RICHEST MAN in the modern history and has profited off the name: “Amazon”, it is in his best interest to save the forest he is named after.

The burning of the Amazon rainforest is an allegory for his business model of profiting off the depletion of the earth’s natural resources which continues to promote unhealthy consumption. Let’s change this metaphor and save the planet!

If there are any suggestions that may make this argument stronger, or other people you think I should add to the list, write them below.

Some things you can do now:

1: use Ecosia as a search engine as opposed to Google. Make it your default homepage! From the add revenue, they plant trees and even have financial reports readily available for everyone. They have promised to plant 1,000,000 trees to undo deforestation. (Ecosia.org)

2. If you have not gone meatless yet, start with one meal a day that is meat free. From January to March of 2018, Brazil exported almost 500,000 tones of beef worldwide (http://www.brazilianbeef.org.br/ExportsByYear.aspx

3. Deforestation is a major cause of the fires. You can reduce your consumption of soya beans and beef in particular, but also corn, rice and sugar. (https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/02/120228123849.htm
