Recalling that the five-year imprisonment of Maldives' opposition leader, Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is politically-motivated, without a free and fair trial and in violation of the Constitution, governing laws and international instruments on judicial independence, we call on the Maldivian government to restore his fundamental rights, allow for a fair appeal process, accept the request for bail and to release him immediately and unconditionally from jail.
