Ban the public wearing of the burqa and the niqab
Ban the public wearing of the burqa and the niqab
Why this petition matters
The public wearing of the Islamic body and face coverings of the burqa (body and face completely hidden) and niqab (essentially and largely identical to the burqa except for a slot for the eyes to see through) is already illegal in the European countries of France, Belgium, Bulgaria, Latvia, Austria and Denmark as well as in Sri Lanka and some parts of Africa. These body and face veils are antiquated symbols of female oppression in the Islamic world, a fact which is verifiable with their inclusion in the most authoritative Islamic texts, as well as being inconsistent with European culture and directly conflicting with the tacitly accepted societal norm, in the modern western world, of openness and ease of identity.
People may differ on the specifics of their reasons but they will agree on the basic premise that these antiquated expressions of oppression and a non-western value system should be banned from public display.
