SOS to UNESCO

In order to safeguard ' ’Angkor Wat’ ' the world heritage of humanity.

We, the citizens of the world have learned with deep indignation and shocking dismay that the project of a vast leisure complex near the archaeological site of Angkor Wat risks denaturing the Angkorian temples, treasures of humanity (world heritage of Unesco). The Chinese casino company NagaWorld intends to build its future complex with two large hotels, a China Town and a Disneyland-style leisure park500 meters from the Angkor site in Siem Reap in northern Cambodia. Indeed, although we encourage any validdevelopment project, be it touristic or commercial, we should reject in principle anything that naturally affects the archaeological heritage of Angkor.

Admittedly, it is undeniable that all the rules, especially the applicablearchitectural ones under the inscription of the site as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will be considered. This kind of Chinese construction, so vulgar and denaturing, will certainly affect the Angkorian Ego, a true heritage of humanity,causing innumerable irreversible catastrophes to the life of the temples which are already fragile and weakened by deterioration over thousand years. Among other things, although we encourage any worthwhile tourism development project, we must reject anything that affects the archaeological heritage of Angkor.

Considering that the repercussions produced by this Chinese park are so numerous such as:

1- Violation on the soul and heritage of the Khmer nation and Denaturation / Annihilation of Angkor's reputation,

2- Cultural shock in the nation’s sacred places of worship,

3- Violation on the Angkorian temples’architectural beauty (absolutely incompatible coexistence of twodifferent worlds),

4- Degradation and damage to archaeological heritage sites,

5- Damage to the stability of the temples linked to the problems of the lack of water at the foundations  caused by groundwater destroyed by new constructions according to scientists and experts,

6- Acceleration of the deterioration of temples already fragile and weakened over time, adding to the effects of pollution and temperature change,

7- The value of cultural heritage is absolutely not exchangeable or convertible into cash,

8- Income collected also does not correspond to the costs of maintaining and / or restoring the temples,

As citizens of the world, we come to bring our sincere support to UNESCO, a prestigious UN organization to use its good office to convince the Cambodian authorities concerned to push back the future project mentioned above as far as possible in order to preserve '' Angkor Wat '' the heritage site of Humanity intact as inscribed in the standard list of threats and 14 main factors affecting the Outstanding Universal Value of World Heritage properties.

Nous, citoyennes (citoyens) du monde avons appris avec profonde indignation et consternation choquante que le projet d’un vaste complexe de loisir à proximité du site archéologique d’Angkor Wat risque de dénaturer les temples angkoriens, trésors de l’humanité (patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco). La compagnie chinoise de casino NagaWorld entend construire son futur complexe avec 2 grands hôtels, une China Town et un parc de loisirs de style Disneyland juste à 500 mètres du site d’Angkor à Siem Reap dans le  Nord du Cambodge. Effectivement bien que nous nous encourageons tout projet de développement soit touristique ou commercial valable, nous nous devrions de rejeter en principe tout ce qui affecte  naturellement au patrimoine archéologique d’Angkor. 

Certes, il est indéniable que toutes les règles, en particulier architecturales, en vigueur en vertu de l’inscription du site au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco seront prises en compte. Ce genre de construction à la Chinoise si vulgaire et dénaturée affectera très certainement l’Ego angkorien, véritable héritage de l’humanité, tout en entraînant d’innombrables catastrophes irréversibles à la vie des temples déjà fragiles et affaiblis par la détérioration avec leur âge plus de mille ans. Entre autres, bien que  nous encourageons tout projet de développement touristique valable, nous nous devons de rejeter tout ce qui affecte  au patrimoine archéologique d’Angkor. 

Considérant que  les contrecoups produits par ce parc chinois sont tellement nombreux  tels que :

1-   Atteinte de l’Âme patrimoniale de la nation khmère et Dénaturation/Anéantissement de la réputation d’Angkor,

2-   Choc culturel aux lieux de culte sacré d’une nation,

3-   Atteinte de la beauté architecturale des temples angkoriens (coexistence absolument non compatible de 2 mondes si différents côte à côte),

4-   Dégradation et atteinte aux sites archéologiques patrimoniaux,

5-   Endommagements de la stabilité des temples liée aux problèmes du manque d’eau aux assises des temples causées par des nappes phréatiques détruites par des nouvelles constructions selon les scientifiques et les experts,

6-   Accélération de la détérioration des temples déjà fragiles et affaiblis avec leur âge plus de mille ans, y compris la pollution et le changement de température,

7-   La valeur culturelle patrimoniale n’est absolument pas échangeable et monnayable,

8-   Revenu recueilli ne correspond pas non plus aux frais de l’entretien et/ou de la restauration des temples,

Nous, soussignés, citoyennes (citoyens) du monde venons apporter  notre sincère soutien à l’UNESCO, une prestigieuse organisation onusienne d’user de son bon office pour convaincre les autorités cambodgiennes concernées pour faire repousser le futur projet sus mentionné le plus loin possible afin de préserver ‘’Angkor Wat’’ le site patrimonial de l’Humanité intact tel qu’ inscrit dans la liste standard des menaces et des 14 facteurs principaux affectant la valeur universelle exceptionnelle des biens du patrimoine mondial.
