Why this petition matters

Quality education is a right that must be accessible and inclusive for all. The COVID-19 Pandemic has placed students in a dangerous and damaging position which continues to compromise our education.

Last March 12, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte placed the Luzon in an Enhanced Community Quarante (ECQ) in a bid to fight off the alarming rise of COVID-19 cases. This includes the restriction of all forms of travel, implementation of a curfew, and the suspension of work and classes.

In an effort to continue education despite the circumstances, universities nationwide have carried out contingency plans to shift all academic activities to online platforms. However, this places both students and educators to bear the consequences of the shift. We must take into consideration the precarious circumstances individuals face during a time of crisis. This includes, among others, the lack of access to stable wifi, data, digital devices, a conducive learning environment and the mental well-being of students, including those of the professors, during a crisis.

We would like to request from our respective Educational Institutions and the Commission on Higher Education to #SuspendOnlineClassesNOW until April 14, 2020. We must recognize that the current situation limits our access to education; more so, the burden of academic obligations further places our welfare at risk.
