Why this petition matters

I am speaking for Superintendent Robyn Williams and ask for your support in sending a strong message to the Metropolitan Police Service to abide by a Police Appeals Tribunal order and retract the threat of a judicial review.

On 22 June 2021, the Police Appeals Tribunal (PAT) ordered that Former Superintendent Robyn Williams be reinstated in the Metropolitan Police Service and her name be removed from entry on the Police Barred List.

The PAT called her sacking "unfair" and "unreasonable" and determined that her dismissal should be replaced with a final written warning, clearing her to return to work. The Tribunal wished all the best for her future.

The Metropolitan Police Service are now applying for a judicial review, saying they believe the panel that overturned her sacking failed to properly assess the seriousness of her conviction.

What is a judicial review? It is a type of court proceeding in which a judge reviews the lawfulness of a decision or action made by a public body.

Judicial review is expensive and each party in a case which goes to a one day substantive hearing is likely to incur legal costs well in excess of one hundred thousand pounds. The legal costs will be paid with public money, taxpayers’ money.

We would have police vs police, which will undermine public confidence in police even further.

Supt Robyn Williams, during her 36-year career, rose to become one of the most senior female African-Caribbean officers in Britain. She won praise for her work after the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, when relations between the traumatised community and the authorities were fraught. She has campaigned for more women in policing and won the Queen’s police medal.

Supt Robyn Williams’s treatment by the Metropolitan Police Service is yet another example of institutional racism and corruption. Radical change is needed.

Please support this petition and speak for Robyn Williams. What happened to her could happen to anyone of us!
