Why this petition matters

Started by Elisa Hinken

Laura Deckelman recently passed away suddenly on May 5th, 2020.  She was a longtime advocate for the Rockaway Ferry which Mayor Mike Bloomberg initially launched as emergency transportation after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.

Laura and her late husband Paul worked tirelessly to advocate for the permanent route of the Rockaway Ferry to become a reality.  Thanks to LAURA, it did!  Rallies, rides, millions of pictures and videos (a very talented photographer and photo journalist), she was also honored to christen the maiden voyage of the permanent ferry.  THOUSANDS of riders enjoy the fruits of her labor, the ease of transportation to Brooklyn, Wall Street and 34th Street each day.

The undersigned request a special honor in memoriam to Laura's tenacity, love and practicality regarding her works in the Rockaway.  We would love a plaque to honor her memory as "Deckelman's Landing" at the ferry stop.  The initial idea for this project was created a few years ago by the late Linda Ruscillo and her husband Daniel.

Laura was the recipient of the New York City Waterfront Alliance "2015 Hero of the Harbor Award" for her tremendous efforts on behalf of ALL New Yorkers.

Please join me by signing this petition and spreading it widely.  We are ROCKAWAY STRONG!  We love you Laura!
