Why this petition matters

Started by Nigel Scott

Plans were submitted in July 2019 to build a two storey house on land on Barrow Lane, Charlton Musgrove opposite St John's cottages. On the proposed site is a 300 year old oak tree with a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) on it. Please view the proposal here:

The Charlton Musgrove Parish Council unanimously rejected the application, and therefore South Somerset District Council will now review the application at the Area East Committee on Wednesday 3rd June 2020.

We would like the residents of Charlton Musgrove to sign this petition so that the councillors and officers of SSDC know, we the residents of the village object to this application. We believe it should be rejected for the following reasons:

1. It is impossible to build on a small site without disturbing the roots of an ancient oak tree that has a TPO on it. The guidance is that 30m should be allowed for tree roots, which is impossible to achieve on this site

2. The application states that there was a previous dwelling on this site. Photographic evidence from 1964, submitted to the Parish council show only a shed was actually on site

3. Charlton Musgrove is rural settlement and whilst there is a requirement to build affordable housing, this is not affordable and is also ribbon development. It doesn't satisfy SSDCs 3 policy tests

4. The application for a dwelling on this site has previously been refused, albeit 34 years ago, however the tree has now enjoyed another 34 years worth of growth in it's root system

Please sign this petition and show your support for rejecting this planning application.
