Why this petition matters
As artists, alumni, and friends of Studio Arts College International (SACI), we are seriously concerned by news that the Fall 2021 semester has been cancelled, despite a promising enrollment. We are very worried that this decision, in the absence of other revenue, will result in the school permanently closing its doors.
SACI was founded in 1975 by Jules Maidoff, an American artist with a dream of starting an art school in Italy. Over the past 46 years, it has become the most prestigious American art school in Florence and is internationally recognized for its importance in arts education.
Countless artists, designers, filmmakers, art historians, and conservationists from all over the world have studied at SACI. All have gained life-changing experiences from their time at SACI.
Closing SACI would be devastating to all who know and love the school. Future students deserve the opportunity to pursue their passions and discover new possibilities in life and art at SACI, and to make connections that will stay with them forever.
We realize that navigating the pandemic is a challenge for all schools, but urge SACI to reopen as soon as safely possible, at reduced-capacity until things pick up again.
Many arts institutions are threatened with closures at this time, but have temporarily found the means to continue through emergency grants and other funding available. As a U.S.-based non-profit institution, SACI qualifies for these. We urge SACI to consider these emergency funding avenues to keep the school open, until enrollment returns to pre-pandemic levels.
We, the undersigned, are committed to help in any effort to ensure SACI’s long-term survival and recovery, as its existence as an art school is essential to so many. We are part of the art community created by Jules Maidoff’s and Mary Beckinsale’s vision, and we are dedicated to keep their dream alive.
