Why this petition matters

Started by Over The Rainbow

The Beninese constitution calls for all Beninese citizens to disregard their differences and show kindness to their fellow human beings. However, while Benin has never criminalized consensual same-sex sexual activity, their protections for the LGBT2SQIA+ are nonexistent, and people who dare to embrace who they are and love who they love face systemic, chronic discrimination. We, the undersigned, demand the Beninese government take the following steps:

1. Institute an age of consent for same-sex couples equal to that of heterosexual couples (18).

2. Pass anti-discrimination laws covering hate speech, violence, the provision of goods and services, and employment.

3. Recognize same-sex couples. Allow same-sex domestic partnerships and marriages.

4. Grant adoption, IVF, and surrogacy rights like those of heterosexual couples to same-sex couples.

5. Allow people to legally change their gender, including on all IDs.

6. Allow members of the LGBT2SQIA+ to serve in the military. End a discriminatory ban on MSM (males who have sex with males) blood donation.

7. Work to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic that affects upwards of 100,000 men and women in Benin alone.

8. Allow the NGO registration of the dozen or so LGBTQ advocacy organizations in the country.

By working with national and international partners, Benin can make life easier for countless thousands of LGBTQ people!
