Why this petition matters

Mom and Cameron's Story - Fox 9 News Story

Samuel Christopher Jones, was a close family friend of Cynthia Edwards' family for many years. Cynthia trusted him on one occasion to watch Cameron, so she could go to work. While Cameron was in Samuel Jones care, he brutally beat baby Cameron Norris to death on February 7, 2003. During the court proceeding, he smiled and scoffed at the victimized family members during his sentencing.

Samuel Jones was released March 8, 2017 after only serving 14 years, of his 20 year maximum sentence. Jones is now a free man, on parole until 2023. Jones has never showed remorse, had no mandated rehabilitation, nor has he faced Cynthia to apologize, for what he did.

Cynthia Edwards will never receive justice for Cameron's death. However, her goal is to provide justice for other children fatally victimized at the hands of an adult. The courts MUST hold offenders 100% accountable. The courts MUST also allow victims time to heal emotionally and mentally before allowing a killer to be set free. Child Homicide is indeed a heinous crime.

Cameron Norris Law – A focus into the future, for a new Child Homicide Statute in Minnesota.

Two objectives are extremely important to me in pushing legislators for harsher sentencing.

One; the offender holding themselves accountable, the offender’s willingness to rehabilitate, and although sentenced harshly, eventually receive a parole date.

Two, is caring for the parents and family’s wellbeing. Parents should not feel defeated by the offender who stole their child’s life and feel defeated by the criminal justice system. Harsher sentencing guidelines will ensure the parents have time to rehabilitate mentally and emotionally from their loss, before the offender is allowed a chance for parole.

"Fighting for Cameron and Kids" Ultimate Goals:

1). For judges to have access to adding additional time of 5 to 15 years past the maximum sentence of an "unintentional" second-degree murder charge.

2). For prosecutors to offer Second-Degree "Intentional" Murder as a plea bargain, for a guilty plea, that will allow an offender a chance at parole after serving 40 years. (30 years served for "good time").

Offenders must; 1). complete mandated rehabilitation program 2). Maintain a consistent job. 3). Complete school requirements. 4). Maintain a clean  prison record, to be considered for parole.
