Why this petition matters

Started by Sophie B

Located in St Andrew's Square, Edinburgh, stands a 150ft statue dedicated to Henry Dundas, also known as the Melville Monument which was erected in 1823.

According to several sources, Dundas recommended delaying abolition of the slave trade by 15 years. Given this, why would we want this statue in our capital if Scotland is happy to be such a diverse country?

Dundas was also known as ‘the Great Tyrant’ and the 'Uncrowned King of Scotland' and according to Historian Hugh Thomas, slavery would have been abolished in the 1790s rather than in 1833.

As well as the 150ft statue, he also has two roads named after him, Dundas Street and Meville Street. Both the statue and street names are completely unacceptable and have no place in Edinburgh.

This petition comes after several statues were removed as part of the Black Lives Matter movement.

This petition now asks for the removal of the statue. This is not what we represent. Please remove this as it serves as a reminder of what we do not stand for. Scotland does not tolerate racism.
