Why anti-racism? Racism is a threat to human rights. Racism poses a major threat to our society, our democracy, equality and people's equal value. Racism can often be viewed as something that is expressed only through racial slurs, physical violence and murder but racism also occurs to a greater extent in the form of so-called microaggressions. Such discrimination is seen in various comments, prejudices and assumptions about different individuals, among many other unjust acts.

It should be a human right not to be oppressed and discriminated because of a person’s skin color, culture, religion and ethnicity. Racism leads to serious consequences that affect an individual's, even entire groups', opportunities for work, education, health care, financial status and social status. Today, the history and imprint of racism is almost unheard of in our education system, and yet to eradicate the ongoing traces of discrimination we need to educate, not ignore or stigmatize what was and still is an iniquity and injustice.

Anti-racism must be actively and continuously implemented in order to counter racism. Some Swedish individuals deem the fight against racism as unnecessary because they do not believe that racism still prevails. However, we need to remember that a racist has preconceived beliefs about a person depending on the person’s appearance and background, and therefore while one person is subjected to discrimination another person will have a different experience. Thus, the belief that racism is extinct is held by people who live a more privileged life than those who have been subjected to racism.

That privilege might come from, among other factors, one’s skin color and/or social class. Another reason for not acknowledging that microaggressions exist today might be that there are people who do not fully understand what racism means, entails and how broad the spectrum of racism is. Racism does not bear a shallow representation that is only defined by a few apparent characteristics, it is an ideology that seeps into every corner of society, even long after the diminishment of its peak because its remnants, notions and damages of hundreds, if not thousands, of years remain in societies’ minds.  

We must therefore challenge the systems and structures that exist today by disseminating knowledge and educating students all over Sweden on the global history of racism and about the whiteness as the norm that prevails globally as a result of history. We must counter racism on a structural level and to enable that, it must first be done on an individual level. We, as individuals have the power to change our mindsets.

It is a shame that we are still struggling today for something that should be obvious. Today’s man has already traveled to space, built skyscrapers, explored the world more than ever before and thus had intercultural meetings and yet despite these advances, racism remains a major problem in our society. Quiet or hidden racism is more common in Sweden than one might think and even such microaggressions pose a threat to human rights.

Anti-racism education might enable further progress, major needed and important changes in our society and for our future generations. It starts with us, you and I, as individuals and continues with our children, grandchildren etc. Let us be an important example for the rest of the world by introducing anti-racism education as a mandatory subject & course in Sweden's education system. In all of Sweden's elementary schools, upper secondary schools and post-secondary education, anti-racism education should be mandatory. Change starts with education and knowledge.

A list of concrete proposals will be sent to decision-making authorities. As individuals, we must first put pressure on these authorities to introduce anti-racism as mandatory education by signing this petition! YOU can be a part of the change and help by signing this petition!

Varför anti-rasism? Rasism är ett hot mot mänskliga rättigheter. Rasism innebär ett hot mot vårt samhälle, vår demokrati, jämställdhet och människors lika värde. Rasism kan ibland ses som något som enbart ter sig i form av rasistiska glåpord, fysiskt våld och mord men rasism förekommer även i form av så kallade mikroaggressioner vilket innebär "subtil" diskriminering i exempelvis form av olika kommentarer, fördomar och antaganden om olika individer baserat på deras hudfärg, kultur, religion och ursprung. Rasism är kort sagt ett brett spektrum.

Det ska vara en mänsklig rättighet att inte bli bemött av rasism på grund av sin hudfärg, kultur, religion och ursprung. Rasism leder till allvarliga konsekvenser som kan påverka en individs/grupps möjligheter till arbete, utbildning, hälso- och sjukvård, ekonomiska status och sociala status. Det är idag inte vedertaget att aktiv anti-rasism behövs för att motarbeta rasism. Anti-rasism är inte en åsikt åtskild från mänskliga rättigheter. Anti-rasism är tvärtom en viktig del i mänskliga rättigheter.

Vi måste därför utmana de system och strukturer som råder idag genom att sprida  kunskap och lära ut om rasismens historia samt om den vithetsnorm som till följd av rasism råder globalt. Vi måste motarbeta rasism på en strukturell nivå och för att möjliggöra det motarbetet så måste det först ske förändringar på individnivå. Vi som enskilda individer har makten att förändra våra tankar och således våra yttre beteenden genom utbildning och kunskap.

Det är skamligt att vi än idag kämpar för något som borde vara självklart. Mänskliga rättigheter ska vara en självklarhet. Att människan idag åkt till rymden, byggt skyskrapor och reser världen över mer än någonsin men trots dessa framsteg och interkulturella möten återstår rasism som ett stort problem i vårat samhälle.Tyst och dold rasism är mer vanligt förekommande i Sverige och även denna form innebär ett hot mot mänskliga rättigheter.

Anti-rasism utbildning kan möjliggöra stora framsteg och är ett betydelsefullt verktyg för att motarbeta rasism i vårt samhälle och för kommande generationer. Förändring börjar med oss, du och jag, som enskilda individer och fortsätter med våra barn, barnbarn osv. Låt oss vara ett viktigt exempel för resten av världen genom att införa anti-rasism utbildning som obligatoriskt ämne & kurs i Sveriges utbildningssystem. I alla Sveriges grundskolor, gymnasieskolor och eftergymnasiala utbildningar ska anti-rasism utbildning vara obligatorisk.

En lista med konkreta förslag kommer att skickas ut till beslutsfattande auktoriteter. Vi som enskilda individer måste först sätta press på dessa myndigheter att införa anti-rasism som obligatorisk utbildning. Det kan DU göra genom att skriva under!
