Why this petition matters

Started by Alex Mees

In light of the recent decision to remove the statue of Thomas Guy from the King's College campus at Guy's Hospital on account of his profiteering from the slave trade, we call on King’s College and Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital Trust to take this opportunity to put up a statue commemorating the life and work of Harold Moody.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Moody studied Medicine at King's College, finishing top of his class in 1910, and then started his own practice in Peckham, having been refused work on account of his skin colour.

As well as being President of the League of Coloured Peoples and being an influential figure in the campaign for racial equality in the 1930s, Moody played a significant role in local organising during the Second World War.

A statue to him would be fitting and is long overdue.
